AN ODE TO ORE

Submitted as a competition entry to the YAC Academy’s Ireland Meditation Mine, this project reimagines the historic Allihies Mountain Mine as a sanctuary rooted in material memory and crafted detail. Once a centre of 19th-century copper extraction, the site is transformed into a place for solitude and reflection, where contemporary fabrication techniques revive the spirit of industrial heritage. The proposal envisions a cultural destination comprising a museum and gallery spaces. Minimal interventions preserve the gravity-defying stone structures while introducing CNC-milled copper elements drawn from the mine’s tooling legacy. From etched window frames and cast signage to sculptural wayfinding devices, copper acts as both narrative device and ornamental language - bridging past and present through material continuity. Through digital craft and contemporary detailing, the project proposes a new identity for the site, one that honours its past while quietly embracing the solitude, wildness, and beauty of the terrain.
